The Battle of Bunker Hill, actually fought on Breed's Hill, ended in a British victory, with the Americans forced to withdraw, although more British had been killed than Americans. The British had to attack the fortified hill three times before they were able to claim it for Britain. The battle became one of the bloodiest and most violent of the war, with over one thousand British troops and four hundred American troops killed. Although the patriots technically lost the battle, they proved their courage and fighting ability, and shook up the British notions of military superiority.
