September 1961- President Kennedy's Schedule


 

1 The President began his day meeting his staff. The Soviets had announced that they were going to resume atmospheric testing of Nuclear weapons. The President had a meeting with his key security team made up of Rusk, McNamara, Dillon, RFK ,Kohler, General Lemnitzer, Nitze, Edward R Murrow, Taylor and Bundy. The President then had a separate meeting with McCloy, Dean, Murrow and Bundy. The President then met with Senators Yarborough, Gruening, and Radolph. After lunch the President had an off the record meetings with Arthur Dean and Congressman Otto Passman. The President then left for Hyannis Port.
2 The First Family went boating.
3 The President and Mrs Kennedy went to St Francis Xavier Church. In the afternoon the first family went boating.
4 The First Family went boating.
5 The President returned to Washington. The President on his return met with his advisors. In the afternoon President Kennedy met with Senators Mansfield, Dirksen, Hayden and Mcgee. He then had a hour long meeting with Rusk, Stevenson, and Cleveland. He then met with Blair Clark and Fred Friendly. In the evening the President took a cruise on the Honey Fritz with Senators Smathers and other guests.
6 The President began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President met with the US Ambassador James Gavin. After lunch the President met with John Gardner and later with Ray Miller.
7 The President met with the Ambassador from Ceylon. He later met with the US Ambassador to Tunisia. The President then met with the National Export Expansion Committee. The President then had an off the record meeting with Senator Olin Johnston. In the afternoon the President met with Hugh Sidney. He then had a security review with;Rusk, McNamara, RFK, Cabell, Murrow, Lemmitzer, Dean Acheson, General Taylor and McGeorge Bundy.
8 The President began his day with a meeting General Taylor, RFK, Senator Ben Smith and Kenneth O'Donnel. He then met with Robert Hansen the Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars who had returned from a European trip, together with Senator Humphrey. The President then met with Senator Wayne Morse. Kennedy then met with Dean Rusk, Robert McNamara, John McCloy, Foy Kohler, Gen. Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy, and Theodore Sorensen. After lunch the President traveled to Hyannis Port.
9 The President and the First Family spent the day boating.
10 The President and the First Lady attended church at St Francis Xavier Church. The First Family spent the rest of the day boating
11 The President and the First Family spent the morning boating. In the middle of the afternoon the President returned to Washington. When the President returned to Washington he received a briefing from his aids. The President then had an off the record meeting with , George Ball, Luther Hodges, Howard Peterson, Edwin State, Edward Gudeman and Myer Feldman. Next the President met with James Webb of NASA and Dr Jerome Weisner.
12 The President began the day with Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The leaders joined the President for a short meeting in the Oval Office. The President then met off the record with Adlai Stevenson. The President the swearing in ceremony of US delegation to the United Nations. The President next met with Senator Albert Gore. The meeting was followed by over an hour spend with Dean Rusk, Arthur Dean and Phillips Talbot. The President later met with Walter Heller and James Tobin. After lunch the President met with Senator Yarborough and Congressman Thompson. The President then traveled to Andrews Air Force base to greet President Ahmed Sukarno of Indonesia and President Modibo Keita of Mali. The President then returned to the White House with the two Presidents who held a meeting. The President ended the day with a Congressional Coffee Hour.
13 The President began his day with a meeting with Ambassador Galbriath. After signing three technical bills the President met with Ahmed Sukarno of Indonesia and President Modibo Keita of Mali. The President then hosted a State luncheon for President Ahmed Sukarno of Indonesia and President Modibo Keita of Mali. In the afternoon the President met off the record with McNamara, Lemnitzer, Taylor and Rostow.
14 The President met with Senator Sam Ervin and Senator Everett Jordan to start his official day. He then had a security meeting with : Rusk, McNamara, RFK, Roy Kohler, General Lemnitzer, General Taylor, General Gabell and Walt Rostow. The President then chaired a cabinet meeting. The President met with the US ambassadors to Ecuador and Chile. After lunch the President met with the US Ambassador to Libya and the Libyan Ambassador to Washington. The President hosted another Congressional Coffee Hour
15 The President met with General Maxwell Taylor, Walt Rostow, Richard Goodwin and Chester Clifton. The President with the brother of the Panamanian President. The President then had a meeting with Gen. Lucius Clay before his departure to take up his post as the President's Special Representative in Berlin. The President then met with Jucelino Kubitchek the former President of Brazil. The President then met with the new Portuguese Ambassador to Washington. The President hosted a luncheon in honor of the Western Foreign Ministers who were meeting in Washington. The President had an off the record meeting with Congressman James Roosevelt and Dr Armand Hammer. The President left Wshington to travel to Hyannis Port.
16 The President and First Lady spent the day boating. The President also played golf.
17 The President and the First Lady attended church at St Francis Xavier Church. The First Family spent the rest of the day boating.
18 The President retuned to Washington. After meeting with his advisors and receiving a security update the President had a meeting with the US Ambassador to Peru and other representative of the State Department. The President hosted a luncheon with publishers of Kentucky newspapers. The President ended his day with a meeting on Defense with McNamara, LeMay,Bohlen, Sorenson, RFK ,Kohler, General Lemnitzer, Nitze, Edward R Murrow, Taylor and Bundy
19 The President began his day with a Legislative Leader Breakfast. The President then met with Preparedness Committed on Armed Forces of the Senate. The President and First Lady traveled to greet the arriving Peruvian President Dr Don Manuel Prado and his wife at the Marine Air Terminal. The Kennedy's accompanied the Prado's to Blair House and then returned to the White House. The President lunched with Sir Oliver Franks and Henry Brandon. After lunch the President had a meeting with the Joint Chief of Staff. In the evening the President hosted a State Dinner for the Peruvian President.
20 The President began his day with a coffee hour in which all the Democratic Senators were invited. He then met with the Peruvian President and his party. The President next signed HR 8102 that amended the Federal Airport Act. The President met with General Thomas Powers the commander of the Strategic Air Command. In the afternoon the President met with outgoing Ambassador of Great Britain. He then met with a group of Business Magazine editors. The President ended the day with meetings with Dean Rusk and Theodore Sorensen.
21 The President had a Congressional Coffee hour for both democratic congressman and the House Democratic Committee. The President then had an off the record meeting with Roger Blough the President of US Steel. The President then met with the US Ambassadors to Brazil and Gabon. The President then went on to meet the incoming Ambassador of India Braj Kumar Nehru. The President then had the cast and directors of the successful political play Advise and Consent for lunch. The President them met with the President of Peru and his party. The President then signed HR 8666 the Fulbright Hays Act. The President then met with member of the Business Council. The President and First Lady attended a Dinner in their honor at the Peruvian Embassy.
22 The President had breakfast with the Vice President and key Democratic Congressman. The President then signed the Peace Corps Bill that made the Peace Corps permanent. He then signed a Saline Water Bill. President Kennedy then had a meeting with Congressman Paul Kitchin . He met with another series of Congressmen before signing additional bills. The President and the First Lady then traveled to Hyannis Port
23 The First Family spent the day boating
24 The President and the First Lady attended church at St Francis Xavier Church. The First Family spent part of the day boating. He then traveled to New York.
25 The President Addressed the United Nations General Assembly. The President gave a luncheon in honor of the delegations from South America. In the afternoon the President met with new US Ambassador to Morocco. He then met with Prince Sihanouk of Cambodia.
26 The President had a breakfast meeting with President Arturo Frondizi of Argentina. Carlyle Hotel, New York City. The President and the First Lady then travled to Newport Rhode Island
27 The President sailed from Hammersmith Farm where he was staying to the Naval War College. There he announced that John McCone was replacing Allen Dulles as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
28 The President and First Family spent the day boating on the Honey Fritz.

31 After a security briefing the President met off the record with LBJ, Rusk, McNamara, Kohler, Bohlen, General Lemintzer, Nite, Taylor, Bundy, Adrian Fisher and McCly. He then met with LBJ and a bipartisan congressional delegation. The President then met with the US Olympic Committee. After lunch he met once again with the same team as he had in the morning. He later had off the record meetings with General Bruce Clark. He ended the day with an hour long meeting with Robert Kennedy
