August 1962- President Kennedy's Schedule


 

1 The President begins his day with a breakfast meeting preparing for his Press Conference. Present are the Vice President and Dean Rusk and other advisors. The President next met with Philip Sprouse the US Ambassador to Cambodia. Next the President signed SR 2996 the Foreign Aid Bill. The President met with Senator Thomas Kuchel. The President then hosted a meeting on Disarmament. After lunch the President gave a Press Conference. The President then resumed the early meeting on Disarmament. Next the President had a meeting of the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.
2 The President began his day greeting a group of Alaskan Indian and Eskimo electronic trainees, they were trained by RCA and will be used to maintain America's early warning system. The President met with Marcos Falcon Briceno the Venezuelan Foreign Ministers. President Kennedy then met with Senator James Eastland. The President next met with Representatives of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. The President next met with members of the National Association of Colored Women Clubs. The President met with David Bell the Director of the Bureau of the Budget.
3 The President began his day with a meeting with Senator Vance Hartke. He then met with the US Ambassador to Chile. He then met with Dean Rusk, Foy Kohler, Martin Hillenbrand, William Tyler and McGeorge Bundy. The President had a luncheon meeting with editors and publishers of California newspapers. The President next with the Governors of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana together with Congressman Frank Chief and Luther Hodges Secretary of Commerce. At 4:45 the President left the Whit House for Hyannis Port.

5 President and Mrs Kennedy went to mass at St Xavier Church. President Kennedy and his family cruise aboard the Patrick J, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
6 The President returned to Washington. He went to the South Lawn for welcoming ceremony for performers of the National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan. The President met with August Heckscher his special assistant for the arts. Marko Nikezic the outgoing Ambassador from Yugoslavia made a farewell visit. The President met with Najeeb Halaby the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Agency. He then met with Congressman Wilbur Mills to end his official day.
7 The President began his day with a breakfast meeting with Democratic Congressional leaders. The President met with international journalist. The President presented the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards. The President dropped by a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Labor-Management. The President next met with Douglas Dillon, he then met with Congressman Wayne Hays. President Kennedy ended his official day meeting with Mather Gulligan of the Saturday Evening Post.
8 The President went to the Rose Garden and participated in the welcoming ceremony for members of the American Institute for Free Labor Management. The President then met with Llewellyn Thomson US Ambassador to the Soviet Union, Next the President met with the Secretary of Labor, Secretary of HEW and the Assistant Special Counsel. The President had luncheon with the AFL-CIO Executive Council. After lunch the President met with Bundy, McCone, Averell Harriman, Michael Forrestal and Desmond Fitzgerald. The President ended his day with a meeting with John McCone.
9 President Kennedy began his meeting with Congressman Daniel Inouye and John Burns democratic candidate for governor of Hawaii. The President next held a meeting on Haiti. The President next had a lengthy meeting on Berlin. After lunch the President met with 600 Peace Corps Trainee's. The President then met with a group of Jewish Leaders. The President had a meeting with his economic team. The President ended the day with a meeting with Senator Thomas Dodd.
10 The President began his day with an extended meeting with with his advisers to discuss the economy and the international monetary situation. The President next met with Dean Rusk and Mayer Feldman. The President had a luncheon with a group of Editors and Publishers from Utah. After the luncheon the President met with Arthur Goldberg and George Meany. The President then left together with Maines Senators to Brunswick Maine and from there to Johns Island.
11 President President Kennedy and party(Charles Spaulding, Paul Fay, James Reed, Senator Muskie,Senator Smith) cruise aboard the Manitou, Johns Island, Maine. The President next met with Dean Rusk. The President met with Arthur Goldberg and Douglas Dillon. The President in the evening spoke to the Nation on the American Economy.
12 The President Kennedy cruises aboard the Manitou with Paul Fay and Peter Lawford, Johns Island, Maine.
13 The President returned to Washington. He signed HR 10786 a minimum wage law.
14 President Kennedy began the day with a Legislative Leaders Meeting. The President met with "Mr Rehabilitation". The President next met with Walworth Barbour the US Ambassador to Israel. The President met with Fred Korth the Secretary of Navy, and Admiral Ralph James Chief Bureau of Ships. After lunch the President met with Eugene Black the President of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The President hosted a meeting on US policy with Israel. Attending were Myer Feldman, Dean Rusk, Charles Johnson, Rober Komer, Philipp Talbot, Ambassador Barbour, Robert Strong and Frank Sloan. The President next watched a USIA film on Mexico. The President next met with Mayor Robert Wagner. The President final meeting of the day was with Ned Kenworthy of the New York Times.
15 President Kennedy went to St Matthews Cathedral for the Feast of the Assumption. The President went to the Navy Yard Annex and inspected the Eagle and addressed the cadets aboard the ship. The President met with a delegation of American Indian Chicago Conference. After lunch the President had a meeting with Averell Harriman, Henry Koren, James Fowler of AID, Roy Wherley, Charles Mann, Carly Kaysen and Michael Forrestal. The President then met with Douglas Dillon, Eugen Black, and George Woods. The President next met with Walter Heller and finally John McCone.
16 President Kennedy begins his day by signing HR 2206 authorizing the construction of a project in Colorado. He then signed S. 405 authorizing construction on the Mann Creek Federal Reclamation Project in Idaho. The President met with Douglas MacArthur, Congressman Mendel Rivers, Congressman Bob Sikes, Congressman Carl Albert and Congressman Leslie Arends. After lunch the President made a film supporting the election of Democrats. The President next met with Robert Kennedy and Kenneth O'Donnel. The President next met with William McChesney Martin the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. The President ended his official day with a meeting with Dan Mich and Laura Berquiet of Look Magazine.
17 President Kennedy departed the White House for a trip west. He began his trip in South Dakota. He inspected the Oahe dam site and went on the power plant. The President went on to Pueblo Colorado, were he gave an address at the Pueblo Public Schools. The President went on from from Pueblo to Yosemite National Park.
18 The President toured Yosemite Valley and flew to Ground-breaking ceremony for the San Luis Dam. Los Baños, California. The President next traveled to Fresno City were he spoke. The President then traveled to Los Angeles.
19 The President attended church at the Church of the Good Shepard in Beverly Hills. He spent the day at the home of his brother-in-law Peter Lawford. At night the President flew back to Washington.
20 The President returned to the White House. He met with Senator Richard Russell. Next he met with Dean Rusk. After lunch the President met with Douglas Dillon, Robert Roosa, George Ball, William Martin, Walter Heller, James Tobin, ,Kermint Gordon, Carl Kaysen, Theodore Sorensen. Next the President met with Luther Hodges, Jack Behrman, Lawrence O'Brien, George Ball and Theodore Sorensen.
21 The President began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. He then met with Robert Troutman. Next he met with Senator Robert Kerr. The President next met with the Foreign Minster of the Republic of Rwanda. He then met with Health Resources Advisory Committee. After Lunch the President met with Adlai Stevenson to discuss the United Nations. He next met with Luther Hodges, George Ball, John Duncan, Theodore Sorensen and Lawrence O'Brien.
22 The President began his day with a breakfast meeting to prepare for the days Press Conference. He next met with Ibrahim al-ajdab the new Ambassador of Lebanon. The President next met with James Gavin the US Ambassador to France. The President then greeted a group of participants from the Harvard International Seminar. The President next met with John Ferguson the US Ambassador to Morocco. After lunch the President gave a Press Conference. After the Press Conference the President met with Sander Vanocur. The President ended his day with a meeting with John McCone and General Maxwell Taylor.
23 President greeted a group of Fulbright Scholars. The President then met with the Net Evaluation Sub-Committee Staff and Joint Chiefs of Staff security personnel who gave an oral report. The President then met with Dean Rusk, Robert McNamara, Roswell Gilpatrick, Lyman Lemnitzer, John McCone,Robert Kennedy, Edward McDermott, General Maxwell Taylor and McGeorge Bundy. The President then addressed the AMVETS convention by telephone. After lunch the President had separate meetings with Abraham Ribicoff, Carl Gilbert, Senator Russell Long and Arthur Goldberg.
24 The President began his day by signing Signing ceremony for HR23, a law authorizing the A Buckle Reclamation Project in Oklahoma. He then met with Senator Robert Kerr. He next met with Lewis Hoffacker the US Consul in Elizabethville, the Congo. The President next met with Walter Lingle, Charles Callahan, OB Lloyd, McGeorge Bundy, Theodore Sorenson, Pierre Salinger and Kenneth O'Donnel. After lunch the President went traveled to Hyannis Port.
25 President Kennedy and Paul Fay cruise aboard the Marlin, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
26 President Kennedy Chris Lawford and the Shriver children attend church at St Francis Xavier Church. He then helicoptered to Hammersmith Farm Newport RI. President Kennedy and the Auchincloss family cruise Narraganset Bay on the Manitou, Newport, Rhode Island.
27 The President returned to Washington. He went directly to Walter Reed Army Hospital to present a medal to Major Lawence Bailey for his service in Laos. The President returned to the White House. After lunch the President met Congressman Sidney Yates . The President then met with Meeting with Dean Rusk, McGeorge Bundy, Walworth Barbour, and Myer Feldman to discuss Egypt, the Middle East. The President ended his day with a meeting with Leon Keyserling the head of the Council of Economic Advisors.
28 President Kennedy began his day with a Breakfast meeting with Democratic Congressional leaders. He then greeted participants in the White House Seminar. The President met with Bernard Boutin the Administrator of the General Services Administration. The President next met with the members of the American Heritage Foundation. The President next met with Averell Harriman, Henry Koren, Roger Hilsman, Leon Janow AID, Hamilton Fowler, AID Paul Nitze, Admiral Hubert Heinz and General Lucius Clay. The President next met with Arthur Goldberg. The President ended his official day by meeting with Douglas Dillon.
29 President Kenndy began his day with a Pre Press Conference Breakfast. He then met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Dahomey. The President next participated at the kick off of the Great Boston United Fund. The President next met with 141 representatives of the Junior Red Cross from 41 countries. The President then met Paul Boutros Meouchi the Patriach of the Maronite Church of Lebanon with other representatives of Lebanon. The President then met with Carlo Perrone Capano the Italian Ambassador to Syria. After lunch the President gave a Press Conference. After the Press Conference the President met with Dean Rusk and Frederick Reihardt the US Ambassador to Italy. The President then had a meeting on Berlin. After the meeting on Berlin the President had a meeting on the Congo.
30 The President began the day by signing HR 11721 the Philippines War Damages Bill. The President next met with Venezuelan Minister of Defense General Antonio Briceno- Linares. The President next met with George Meany. His next meeting was with General Lucius Clay and General Maxwell Taylor. The President announced the appointment of W. Willard Wirtz as Secratary of Labor. The President next met Prince Juan Carlos of Spain, Princess Sophia of Greece, and Ambassador of Spain Antonio Garriques. The President met with a group of older Peace Corps Volunteers. After lunch the President met with General Maxwell Taylor.
31 The President began his day with signing ceremonies for the Communications Satellite Act of 1962. The President had an off the record meeting with a group of 20 Senators. The President then met with Senator Olin Johnson. The President next met with William Leonhart the US Ambassador to Tanganyika. Next the President met the outgoing German Ambassador to the US Wihelm Grewe. The President next swore in James Rame and John Palfrey as Atomic Energy Commissioners. The President met with Dean Rusk and then left for Newport Rhode Island. At Quonset Point Rhode Island the President awaited the arrival of Mrs Kennedy and Caroline from Italy. When they arrived they all took a helicopter to Hammersmith Farm Newport.
