August 1961- President Kennedy's Schedule


 

1 The President began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President then met with the Chinese Vice President and his party. The President had a short meeting with LBJ. The President then met with Bundy General Taylor and General Clifton. President Kennedy then met with an Illinois state democratic delegation. The President had lunch with Alfred Kazin and Arthur Schlesinger. The President attended the a ceremony in honor of the 15th Anniversary of the Fulbright Act. The President had an off the record meeting with Dr Eugene Staley and economist who specialized in Viet Nam.
2 The President had breakfast with Dean Rusk. The President met with his economic team. The President met with General Maxwell Taylor and McGeorge Bundy. The President met with Senator Humphrey. He then met with Michael DiSalle the governor of Ohio. The President next met with a delegation from Guatemala. After lunch the President met with Dillon, Bell, Heller and Sorensen in a off the record meeting. The President and his party me with the Secretary of State of Tunisia. The President then had an off the record meeting on South America. In the evening the President attended a dinner given in his honor by the Chinese Vice President.
3 The President began his day with a meeting with Senator Albert Gore, Walter Heller and Kermit Gordon. The President met the new Ambassador from Nepal,then met with Senator Russel Long. He then met with Eugene Zuckert and General Frederick Smith the Vice Chief of Staff of the Airforce. In the afternoon the President me with Dean Rusk before his departure to Paris. He also had an off the record meeting with Sargent Shriver
4 The President began the day with a Cabinet Meeting. He then met with the Governor of Nevada. The President then me with the AFL-CIO Executive Committee and the Secretary of Labor. The President then met with the Ambassador of Thailand, who delivered a personal letter from the King. The President next met with Senator Kerr of Oklahoma. The President next met with James Webb the Administrator of NASA. In the afternoon the President met with Senator Kenneth Keating. The President then flew to Hyannis Port.
5 The President spent his day boating. Adlai Stevenson, Arthur Schlesinger and Harland Cleveland joined the family for the boating
6 The President and Mrs Kennedy attended church in the morning. The family went boating in the afternoon.
7 The President returned to Washington in the morning. The President met with Congressman James Roosevelt, and Mr Franklin D Roosevelt. The President signed S 857 to establish Cape Cod National Seashore. The President met with Senator Vance Harke. The President then had meetings with Senators George Smathers, and Senator Pat McNamara. The President had an off the record meeting with unofficial Indian(Asia) representatives.
8 The President began his day with a meeting of the Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President then signed S-1643 the agricultural act of 1961. The President then had a National Security Council Meeting. President Kennedy met with Senator Calib Boggs. He then met with representatives of Wisconsin democratic committee. After lunch the President met separately with Senator Hiram Fong, Leveret Saltonstall and Thomas Kuchel
9 The President met with representatives of the National Jewish War Veterans. He then had an off the record with Congressman Bob Sikes. The President after Lunch with two groups of five members of the House of Representatives. The President went to the home of Senator John Sherman Cooper for dinner.
10 The President began his day with breakfast with McNamara, Ball, Bundy, Sorenson, Tobin, Saligner. The President then had a Press Conference. The President then had a meeting with his security team to discuss South East Asia. The President met with Senator Russel Long and Governor Jimmie Davis Louisiana. After lunch the President met with George Meany of the AFL-CIO in the mansion. He ended his day with Clark Mollenhoff a journalist from the Des Moines Register.
11 The President began the day with a Meeting with U. Alexis Johnson, William Tyler, Wymberly Coer, Allen Dulles, Richard Bissell, and Arthur Schlesinger. The President met with Senator Quentin Burdick. He then met with Dean Rusk. After lunch the President had an off the record meeting with Ben Bradlee. He then met with Secretary of Defense McNamara. President Kennedy next met with the US Ambassador to Bolivia. The President then left of Hyannis Port
12 The President spent the day boating
13 The President and the First Lady attended church at St Francis Xavier Church. The First Family spent the rest of the day boating
14 President Kennedy returned to Washington. His first meeting was with US Ambassador to the USSR Llewellyn Thompson. The day before the Soviets had erected the Berlin Wall. The President had an off the record meeting with General James Van Fleet and Senator George Smathers. After lunch the President met with General Maxwell Taylor. He then met with Governor Welsh of Indiana and his delegation. The President then met with Dean Rusk.
15 The President began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President then met with the VP Senators Mansfield, Smathers, and Humphrey. The President then met with General Maxwell Taylor. After lunch the President met with George Kennan. He then traveled to the State Department were he addressed the Foreign Policy Briefing Conference. The President then had an Off the Record meeting with Senator Wayne Morse.
16 The President began the day with breakfast with Dean Rusk. The President met with Congressman Samuel S Stratton. After lunch the President met with Senator Ribicoff. He had an off the record meeting with Walter Reuther of the United Auto Workers, and then another meeting with Ribicoff joined with Congressman James Delaney.
17 The President began his day with a meeting with General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy and General Clifton. The President then met with a delegation of the Polish American Congress. After lunch the President met with Rusk, McNamara, Seaborg, Arthur Dean, General Lemnitzer, Don Wilson, Bundy, Allen Dulles and William Foster. That meeting continued with RFK joining them.
18 The President had a meeting with General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy and General Clifton. He then met with the US Ambassador to the Republic of the Congo. The President had a meeting with the Orders of the Sons of Italy. He then met with the Vice President. The President had an off the record meeting with Marguerite Higgin a well known war correspondent. The President met with a special envoy of the President of Tunisia. The President ended the day with a meeting with the VP, General Lucius Clay, Dean Rusk, General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy, Charles Bohlen, and Walter Rostow.
19 In the morning the President met with Defense Secretary McNamara and General Earl Wheeler. He then participated in an extensive Intelligence Briefing. In the evening the President welcomed Treasury Secretary Douglas Dillon back form the Inter-American Economic and Social Conference
20 The President wen to mass at St Mathew Cathedral. He then flew to Hyannis Port. There he went boating with the family.
21 The President left Hyannis Port in the afternoon. He retuned to the White House by 5:30. He then met with the Vice President who had returned from a visit to West Berlin. The President had additional meetings with members of the White House staff.
22 The President began his day with a Breakfast for Legislative Leaders. The President met with Arthur Dean and McGeorge Bundy on arms control. He then met with Douglas Dillon and Henry Fowler as well as the Democratic Members of the House Ways of Means Committee. In the afternoon the President prepared a broadcast for the United Community Campaigns of America. The President then greeted Handicapped Children on the South Grounds of the White House. The President went to Mayflower Hotel to participate in a Democratic National Committee reception. After leaving the reception he took a cruise on the Honey Fitz with Senator and Mrs Cooper, Douglas Dillon and his wife, Mrs John Fell, William Wald, Mr and Mrs Charles Bartlett and Joseph Alsop.
23 The President met with LBJ and Sam Rayburn. The President had a meeting with Averell Harriman and Arthur Schlesinger. The President met with a delegation from the National Association of Intergroup Relations. The President had a meeting with General Maxwell Taylor and McGeorge Bundy. The President had a meeting with Douglas Dillon, David Bell and Walter Heller. The President later had an off the record meeting with Congressman Emanuel Celler. He also had an off the record meeting with the banker George Woods who would go on to become the President of World Bank in 1963.
24 The President began the day with a meeting with General Maxwell Taylor and McGeorge Bundy. The President had off the record meeting with Adam Clayton Powell, the Congressman John Blatnik and with the Vice President. In the afternoon the President met with a delegations from the National Association of Manufactures, the Chamber of Commerce, Committee of Economic Development and the Department of Commerce. After lunch the President met with Ambassador of France. He had a meeting with Arthur Goldberg and Walter Heller. The President ended the day with an off the record meeting with Senator Robert Kerr.
25 The President had a morning meeting with his economic team including Douglas Dillon and William Martin the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. He then has a meeting to discuss export controls. The President had off the record meetings with Allen Dulles and with Ambassador to NAO Thomas Finletter. After lunch and a swim the President flew to Hyannis Port.
26 The President and First Family together with members of his extended family spent the day boating
27 The President and First Lady attended at St Francis Xavier Church. The family relaxed and boated the rest of the day,
28 The President returned to the White House in the morning. He had an off record meeting with Robert Eastbrook of the Washington Post. The President greeted the first group of Peace Corps volunteer before they left for Africa. The President had a lengthy meeting on Cuba and then met with Secretary of the Treasury Dillon
29 The President began the day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. He then met with Senator George Smathers. He had a meeting with Douglas Dillon together with Senator Fulbright. The President then met with a group of Asian newspaper executives. The President then met with the Ambassador of Ethiopia. After lunch he met with General Lucius Clay. In the early evening the President hosted another Congressional Coffee hour. The President then took a evening cruise on the Honey Fitz with Senator Smathers, Richard Danner and two women
30 The President began his day with a security briefing. he then met with Rusk, Taylor and Bundy, that meeting expanded to a larger group of State and Defense Department officials. The President met with the Ambassador of Germany. In the afternoon the President gave a press conference. Late in the afternoon the President met with off the record with Rusk, Dulles, Kohler, Bohlen, Goodwin, Sorenson and Schlesinger. He ended the day with an off the record meeting with Drew Pearson
31 After a security briefing the President met off the record with LBJ, Rusk, McNamara, Kohler, Bohlen, General Lemintzer, Nite, Taylor, Bundy, Adrian Fisher and McCly. He then met with LBJ and a bipartisan congressional delegation. The President then met with the US Olympic Committee. After lunch he met once again with the same team as he had in the morning. He later had off the record meetings with General Bruce Clark. He ended the day with an hour long meeting with Robert Kennedy
