January 14, 2008 Olmert and Barak at Odds

This is not new news in Israel, but today, Olmert and Barak clearly spoke with very different voices about Iran. Olmert spoke to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, stating that Israel cannot allow Iran to get nuclear weapons, and that everything was on the table to stop it's clearly threatening Iran.A few minutes later, Ehud Barak spoke, and stated that everyone should stop talking about Iran. There is a great deal that can be done, but nothing by talking. Barak stated that talking does not stop centrifuges or any other developments.

While the high school teachersí strike was settled last month, the strike by senior University professors continues. The Universities tried to get a restraining order against the strikers by the labor court, but the court refrained from issuing it, for the moment. The Universities are on the verge of canceling the academic year. This will have devastating consequences for the universities, the students and the country. Let's see Israel is going to continue to compete in the world based on its highly educated population- oh, and by the way, the whole country lost a year because of a strike.Itís hard to make up something so absurd.
