< Warfare Between Settlers and Virginian Indians
Virginian Indians
In 1618, Powhatan died. His role was taken over by his brother, Opechancanough. Opechancanough decided to attack the colonists around Jamestown, and initially killed nearly a third of them. The English retaliated, however, and, over a ten year period, decimated the Indians. In 1608, nearly sixty thousand Indians are thought to have lived around the Chesapeake Bay area. By 1669, less than 2,000 remained.
