Bobby Hull, nicknamed the "Golden Jet" for his blond hair and blazing speed, was one of the greatest and most exciting players in the history of ice hockey. Born in Ontario, Canada, he reached the National Hockey League as a teenager and quickly established himself as a superstar with the Chicago Black Hawks, combining tremendous speed, strength, and one of the hardest shots the game had ever seen.
A powerful left wing, Hull electrified crowds with his end-to-end rushes and his thunderous slap shot, which terrified goaltenders. He led the league in scoring repeatedly, won multiple Most Valuable Player awards, and in 1962 helped bring the Stanley Cup to Chicago. He became the first player to score more than fifty goals in a single season, breaking a long-standing barrier and redefining offensive hockey.
In 1972 Hull stunned the sports world by leaving the established NHL to sign a then-astonishing contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the upstart World Hockey Association. His defection gave the new league instant credibility and helped reshape the economics of professional hockey, and he continued to star and win championships in the rival league.
One of the most popular athletes of his era, Hull was a tireless ambassador for the game, famous for staying after games to sign autographs for fans. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and his son Brett became a star in his own right. He died in 2023, remembered as one of hockey's true legends.
