Charles Lee

1758–1815 · Attorney-General

Charles Lee studied law with Jared Ingersoll in Philadelphia, and was admitted to the bar. He was sent as a delegate to the Continental Congress, then served in the Virginia Assembly. Lee was a naval officer of the Potomac District until 1795, when President Washington appointed him Attorney-General.

Charles Lee studied law with Jared Ingersoll in Philadelphia, and was admitted to the bar. He was sent as a delegate to the Continental Congress, then served in the Virginia Assembly. Lee was a naval officer of the Potomac District until 1795, when President Washington appointed him Attorney-General. He remained in this position until 1801. President Jefferson offered him the position of Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, but he declined the appointment. Lee died on June 24, 1815, in Fauquier County, VA.
