was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1724. He was sent to England at an early age to receive an education. He returned to Charelston in 1741. By the age of 21 he entered business, which he was successful at. Gadsen was a member of the first Continental Congress. In 1776 he took to the field as lieutenant colonel. He was actively involved in the defense of Charelston. Gadsen was promoted to brigadier general. Gadsen was elected as governor of South Carolina, but declined because of his age and health. Gadsen died in 1805
