First Black's Arrive in Jamestown

Blacks Arriving

On August 20, 1619, a Dutch ship arrived at Jamestown. The ship carried on board twenty captured Africans, who were sold as slaves at Jamestown. The initial Blacks to arrive were considered indentured servants (servants who were bound by contract). At that time there were many whites in similar circumstances. These Blacks were freed many years later, when the terms of their servitude contract ended.
