Rosedale was built during 1877 at Norfolk, Va., as a wooden,
side-wheel passenger and freight steamer for river service. She was chartered 10 July 1918 for U.S. Navy service from R. W. Bryson of Philadelphia, Pa., and placed in service 22 July 1918. Rosedale operated on local patrol and transport duty in the 4th Naval District until returned to her owner 31 March 1919.
