Matchless, a mahogany-hulled, two-masted schooner built at Key West, Fla., in 1859 and used as a slaver before the Civil War, was acquired by the Navy in World War I from the Coast and Geodetic Survey by Executive order dated 1 April 1917. After service as a patrol ship, she was returned to the Coast and Geodetic Survey following the Armistice.
