Madera

A county in central California. Madera is a Spanish word meaning "lumber." The county was formed from a part of Fresno County after the building of the town of Madera, which was a lumber center.

(APA-244 : dp. 12,450; 1. 455'; b. 62'; dr. 24'; s. 17.7 k.;

The name Madera was assigned to APA-244 on 26 April 1945; but naval acquisition of the Haskell-class attack transport to be built by Oregon Shipbuilding Corp., Portland, Oreg., under a Maritime Commission contract was canceled 27 August 1945.
