Women in Islam

Under Arab tribal law women had no legal status. In early Islamic society women however, had a nearly equal status to men. In the Umayyad period women were active in relgious economic and political life. As time went on womans status declined. Women became to be seen more and more as property. Women needed to veil themselves and many women were often secluded in harems.
