The ultimate expression of Islamic art and architecture can be seen in the mosques. The first great work of Isamic architecture was the Dome of the Rock built in Jerusalem in 691. The largest mosque ever built is the great Mosque of Samarra built between 848-852. It covered 10 acres and contained 464 aisles. Another remarkable mosque is the ninth century mosque at Cordoba in Southern Spain.
Other examples of Muslim architicture are some of the palaces that were built. The most famous of them are the fourteenth century Alhambra palaces in Spain.
