New Prime Minister of Japan
On April 26th 2001 Junichiro Koizumi became the Prime Minister of Japan. Koizumi ran an insurgent campaign becoming the surprise leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. The LDP has been the long time leader of the country, and its leader . Koizumi campaigned to become head of the party on a platform of clear reform and his election as party leader and subsequent appointment as Prime Minister seemed to usher a new era into Japanese politics and government.
