October 1962- President Kennedy's Schedule


 

1 The President began his day by attending the swearing in ceremony for Arthur Goldberg as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. The President presented the Distinguished Service Medal to General Lyman Lemnitzer. The President then attended the Swearing-in ceremony for General Maxwell Taylor as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to replace General Lemnitzer. After lunch the President met with George Ball, Ralph Dungan and Carl Kaysen.
2 The President began his day with a breakfast for Legislative Leaders. The President then met with New York State Savings and Loan Association. The President next signed S 2768 the United Nations Bond Bill. He then signed HR 8520 Drainage of Wetlands Bill. The President next met with James Gavin the US Ambassador to France. The President met with C.R Smith the President of American Airlines. The President gave a luncheon for Foreign Ministers of Latin America. After returning from Lunch the President met with Dillon, Bell, Heller, Sorensen, Ackley, Staat and Charles Schultz. He then had a meeting with Senator Paul Douglas. The President ended his official day with a meeting with Allen Lightner the senior diplomatic representative in Berlin.
3 President Kennedy began the day with a meeting with Senator Ben Smith. That meeting was followed by a meeting with Congressman Charles Bennett. The President also met with Senator Henry Jackson. The President next met with British Ambassador, followed by a meeting with George Gardner,. President Kennedy next met with Cyrus Vance. The President then met with J Edgar Hoover the head of the FBI over lunch. In the evening the President had a meeting with Rusk, McNamara, Bohlen, Llewellyn Thomspon, Robert Kennedy and Theodore Sorensen.
4 The President was sick and cancelled all of his meetings.
5 The President began his day with a meeting with Senator Carl Hayden and Congressman Morris Udall. He later met with Senator Gale McGhee. The President next met with the Mayor of West Berlin Willy Brandt. The President next had a luncheon at the White House with Crown Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia. After lunch the President traveled to Cincinnati Ohio. There he spoke at a Democratic Rally. From Cincinnati the President flew to Detroit.
6 President Kennedy's started his day in Detroit were he gave a short address outside his hotel. The President then traveled to Flint Michigan. Their he Addressed a Democratic Party rally at the Municipal Mall in Flint. The President traveled to Muskegon Michigan and gave an address. President Kennedy next traveled to Minneapolis were he attended a fund raising reception. He then traveled to St Paul were he spoke at the Hippodrome. The President returned to Minneapolis for the night.
7 President Kennedy attends Mass at St. Paul Cathedral, St. Paul, Minnesota. The President had planned to attend a rally in St Clound but due to poor weather returned to Washington.
8 President Kennedy met with Senator Wayne Morse. The President then met with John McCone and McGeorge Bundy. In the afternoon the President had a series of meetings on economic policy including one with Treasury Secretary Dillon, CEA Chairman Walter Heller, Budget Director David Bell, Elmer Staats, Henry Fowler, and Charles Schultz.
9 President Kennedy began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President next met with General Kwon Chung the Ambassador of Korea. President Kennedy signed the HR 8181 the Aquarium Bill. The President then had a meeting on Cuba with Robert Kennedy, John McCone, Edwin Martin, George Bell, McGeorge Bundy and Ralph Dungan. After Lunch the President had a meeting with French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville, Ambassador of France Hervé Alphand, Secretary of State Rusk, Charles Bohlen, William R. Tyler, and Charles Malloy. The President later met with General Maxwell Taylor, John McCoone and Roswell Gilpatric. He then met with Edward McDermott. The President ended his official day with a meeting with Luther Hodges.
10 The President started his day by signing S 1552 the Drug Labeling Law. President Kennedy met with a group of United States Attorneys in the Rose Garden. The President then went to MATS terminal to greet President Sekou Touré of Guinea. Upon returning to White House the President met with the Guinean President. The President gave a luncheon in honor of President Sekou Touré of Guinea. After lunch the President met with Senator Robert Kerr. He then met with General Wheeler. In the evening the President traveled to Baltimore and spoke at the Fifth Regiment Armory. He then returned to Washington.
11 The President signed HR 7927 to adjust postal rates. President Kennedy next met with Howard P Jones the US Ambassador to Indonesia. The President next met with William Attwood US Ambassador to Guinea. Next the President met with John Gunther. Following that the President met with William Macomber the US Ambassador to Jordan. The President next signs HR11970, the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The President next flew to New York City.
12 The President gave a brief address at a fund raising breakfast at the Carlyle Hotel. The President drove to Newark and spoke at the Columbus Day Celebrations in Newark. The President then returned to New York to review NY's Columbus Day Parade. The President then flew to Pittsburgh. The President then spoke at an Aliquappa Rally . In the evening the President gave a speech at the University of Pittsburgh.
13 The President began his day with an address at McKeesport PA. Next the President traveled to Monessen PA were he spoke. He then spoke in Washington PA. The President then traveled to Indianapolis were he spoke. Next he traveled to Louisville. President Kennedy addresses a Democratic Party rally, State Fairgrounds, Louisville, Kentucky.
14 President Kennedy went to church at St Mary Magdalene. He then traveled to Niagra Falls New York were he spoke at a Democratic Rally. From there he went to nearby Buffalo were he spoke at the General Pulaski Day Celebration. The President then traveled to New York City. He met with Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai Stevenson, Carlyle Hotel, New York City. At Midnight the President left New York and flew to Washington.
15 The President greeted the Algerian Prime Minister on the South Grounds of the White House. The President then had a meeting and luncheon with Prime Minister Ahmed Ben Bella of Algeria .After the lunch the President met with Mohammed Ali the minister of External Affairs of Pakistan.
16 Day One Cuban Missile Crisis President Kennedy received Commander Walter Schirra and his family at the White house. The President met Congressman Ross Bass. He then had a meeting with C Douglas Dillon, Henry Fowler and Myer Feldman. Next the President met with his Panel on Mental Retardation. The President met with Charles Bohlen the new US Ambassador to France. Next the President had his first meeting on Cuba. Attending were the Vice President, Dean Rusk, General Maxwell Taylor, Roswell Gilpatric and Edwin Martin. The President then hosted a luncheon in honor of Hasan al Rida-al Snnusi the Crown Prince of Libya. After lunch the President gave an address before the National Foreign Policy Conference for Editors. The President then met with the Libyan Prince. The morning meeting on Cuba resumed and it lasted from 6:30 to 7:55. The President and First Lady dined with Mr and Mrs Philip Graham, Ambassador Charles Bohlen, Ambassador Herve Alphand, Mrs Thomas Byrandon and Sir Isiah Berlin.
17 Day Two Cuban Missile Crisis: President Kennedy begins his day with a meeting with West German Foreign Minister Dr. Gerhard Schroeder. The President then went to St Mathews Cathedral to commemorate the National Day of Prayer. The President next attended a luncheon given in his honor at the Libyan Embassy. The President flew to Connecticut. He spoke at rallies in Bridgeport, Waterbury and New Haven before returning to Washington.
18 Day Three Cuban Missile Crisis: The President presented the Harmon Trophies in the Rose Garden. The President then held a full Cabinet Meeting. The President next met  with national security advisers to discuss the Cuban situation. He then met with Eisaku Sato the former Finance Minister of Japan. After lunch the President met with Dean Rusk and Llewellyn Thompson. The President then had a 2 hour and 15 minute meeting with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin.
19 Day Four Cuban Missile Crisis: The President traveled to Cleveland were he gave an address. He then visited Lincoln Tomb in Springfield Ill and then gave an address at the Illinois State Fair Grounds. The President then traveled to Chicago. There he gave an Address to the Dinner of the Democratic Party of Cook County.
20 Day Five Cuban Missile Crisis:The President cut his trip in the Midwest short, ostensibly due to a cold but in reality due to Cuban Crisis. 21 Day Six Cuban Missile Crisis: The President and the First Lady attened Church at St Stephens in the morning. The President chaired a National Security Meeting form 2:30 to 5 Participants were Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy CIA John A. 22 Day Seven Cuban Missile Crisis: The President began the day with a meeting with George McGhee. He then met starting at 11AM with Rusk, Ball ,Hillenbrand, Michael Forrestal and Bundy in what became known as the political track at 11:47 Paul Nitze and Colonel Armstrong joined them to discuss what became known as the Berlin Contingency. At 3 PM the National Security Council met in the same configuration as the day before. That meeting lasted one hour. The President then met with Milton Obote the Prime Minister of Uganda for 45 minutes. At 4:45 the President held a Cabinet Meeting to brief the cabinet on the crisis. At 5:30 he met a Bipartisan Congressional Delegation to brief them. At 7PM the President Addressed the Nation.
23 Day Eight Cuban Missile Crisis: The President Began the day by meeting with Robert Kennedy between 9:30 and 10. The President then took part in the EXCOM meeting:The EXCOm consisted of Vice President Johnson, Secretary of State Rusk , Secretary of Defense McNamara, Secretary of Treasury Dillon, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, Director of the CIA McCone, Under Secretary of State Ball, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gilpatric , Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff General Taylor, the Ambassador at Large Thompson, the Special Counsel O'Donnell l and the Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Bundy. The President then met with the newly appointed Ambassador of Jamaica. Between 6 and 7 the Excom met again. At 7:05 the President issued a proclomation beginning the blockade of Cuba
24 Day Nine Cuban Missile Crisis: The President Began the day by meeting with Robert Kennedy between 9:30 and 10. The President then took part in the EXCOMM meeting. After Lunch the President met with Henry Luce and Mr Furnberger. He also had a meeting with the Foreign Minister of Portugal. The President had a short meeting late in the afternoon with Senator Fulbright. He had a short meeting with Rusk, McNamara, McCone, Lovett, Bundy and Sorensen at 5:05 before meeting with a Bipartisan Legislative Group.
25 Day Ten Cuban Missile Crisis: The President Began the day with the daily the EXCOMM meeting. He met with Dean Acheson. At 5 He had another EXCOMM meeting.
26 Day Eleven Cuban Missile Crisis: The President Began the day with the daily the EXCOMM meeting. The only meeting he had not directly related to the crisis was with the Ambassador of India
27 Day Twelve Cuban Missile Crisis: The President Began the day with a meeting with Kenneth O'Donnell and McGeorge Bundy. The President accepts the credentials of the Ambassador from Trinidad and Tobogo The President then chairs the daily the EXCOMM meeting. The President the met with the Civil Defense Committee of the Governors Conference. The President met the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and Ambassador David Ormsby Gore.
28 Day Thirteen Cuban Missile Crisis: The President attended Church at St Stephens. He then held a and Meeting with the EXCOMM to discuss the Soviet Union's agreement to withdraw missiles from Cuba. The President went after the meeting to Glenn Ora for a few hours, but in the early evening her returns with the First Family.
29 The President began his day with a meeting of EXCOMM. Later the President meets the new Ambassador of the Philippines. He meets Admiral George Anderson and General David Shoup.In the afternoon the President met with Senator Hubert Humphrey. At 6:30 the President chaired another EXCOMM meeting
30 The President chaired another EXCOMM meeting to start the day. He then met with RFK, LLewellyn Thompson, McGeorge Bundy and Sorensen. Next the President met with General Curtis LeMay, Colonel Ralph Steakley, Colonel Joe O'Grady and Major Richard Hoyser. The President greeted 80 Brazilian students. In the afternoon the President met with Philip Graham and Clark Clifford.
31 The President began the day with a short EXCOMM meeting. He then addressed the graduating class of the FBI Academy. When he returned to the White House he met a group of Anglican Clerics. After lunch the President chaired an off the record meeting on the Congo. He then held another EXCOMM meeting.
