December 1961- President Kennedy's Schedule


 

1 The President attended the swearing ceremony for Brooke Hays. The President then met with Dean Rusk and McGeorge Bundy. The President met with Orville Freeman and others on Agricultural policy. The President then met off the record with Freeman, Ball, Peterson, Lawrence O'Brien, Meyer Feldman, John Duncan and Ray Icanas. The President awarded the Dr Hans Bethe the Enrico Fermi Award. The President had lunch with Minnesota Newspaperman. The President with Arthur Goldberg, John Macy, Robert McNamara, Richard Murphy, David Bell, Dr Daniel Moynihan, Theodore Sorensen, Lee White and Carlise Rundge. The President then met with Edmond Gullion the US Ambassador to the Congo. The President then met with Rupert Murdoch Publisher and Managing Director of the News Ltd of Australia.
2 The President met in the morning with Ambassador Adlai Stevenson. President Kennedy then attended the Army Navy Game.
3 President Kennedy attended church at St Stephens Church. The President then flew to Glen Ora In Middleburg VA with Ambassador Stevenson and Mrs Fell.
4 The President returned to Washington. He met with Postal Workers. The President also had a meeting with the Joint Chief of Staffs.
5 The President be with Arthur Goldberg, Luther Lodges, George Ball, Myer Feldman and Lawrence O'Brien. The President then received a group of foreign students. The President had a meeting with new Ambassador of Cost Rica. The President then met with the National Security Council. The President then met with Walter Heller, George Ball, James Tobin, Carl Kaysen and Kermit Gordon. The President then traveled to New York. The attended the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Awards.
6 The President gave an address to the National Associations of Manufacturers. The President then flew to West Palm Beach.
7 The President traveled to Miami Beach and spoke to the delegates of the Young Democrats of America. In the afternoon the President addressed the National Convention of the AFL-CIO.
8 The President attended mass at Edwards Catholic Church.
9 President Kennedy returned to Washington.
10 The President traveled to Glen Ora, Middleburg VA- President Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy attended Mass at the Community Center in Middleburg, Virginia and returned to Glen Ora.
11 The President returned to White House. The President met with General Maxwell Taylor. The President met women delegates who were attending the United Nations General Assembly. The President then met with Rowland Evans. The President then met with Governor Jack Gage and Senator JJ Hickey of Wyoming. President Kennedy met Vermont C Royster of the Wall Street Journal.
12 The President met with Senator John Sparkman. He then met with Orville Freeman, Lawrence O'brien and Myer Feldman. Next he met with Stewart Udall. Elmer Staats, Walter Heller, John Carver, Orville Freeman, Theodore Sorensen and Lee White. The President then had a meeting with former Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Director General of the Atlantic Institute. The President then met with Petre Balaceanu the Ambassador of Rumania. The President then swore in Chester Bowles as a special advisor. The President hosted members of the Freedom of Information Committee, National Association of Broadcasters for lunch. The President met with George Ball, Mennen Williams, Harlan Cleveland, McGeorge Bundy and Ralph Dungan. The President ended the day with a meeting with Hugh Sidey.
13 The President met with General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy, and General Chester Clifton. The President then met with Armin Meyers the US Ambassador to Lebanon. He then met with William Crawford the Ambassador to Rumania. President Kennedy then met with Congressman Cleveland Bailey. The President then met with Governor Frank Morrison of Nebraska. In the afternoon the President met with Congressman Byron Rogers. He then met with George Ball, Harlan Cleveland, Mennen Williams and Ralph Dungan. The President attended the White House Christmas Party for employees.
14 The President met with Congressman Carl Albert. He then met with the Secretary of the Army Elvis Stahr and General James Van Fleet. The President then met with Dr Jerome Wiesner. The President met with the new US Ambassador to Guatemala. The President had an off the record meeting with Senator Robert Kerr. The President then met with officers of the National Rural Electric Cooperative. The President had a meeting with Professor James Burns. The President had an extensive briefing in the afternoon in advance of his South American trip.
15 The President met with Robert Meyner the governor of New Jersey. He then met off the record with Senator Alexander Wiley. The President and the First Lady flew to San Juan Puerto Rico. The Governor of Puerto Rico gave a Black Tie dinner in honor of the President and First Lady.
16 The President and First Lady flew to Caracus Venezuela. They were met at the airport by an official welcoming party. The President then visited a number of site that the Alliance for Progress was funding programs. The President then traveled to the La Morita farming district, from there he traveled to Maracay. The Presidential parties then traveled back to Caracas. President Kennedy had a meeting with Venezuelan President Betancourt. I the evening the Venezuelan President hosted a dinner in honor of the President and the First Lady. The dinner was followed by a reception attended by 300 guests that took place between 10PM and midnight.
17 The President began the day by laying a wreath at the tomb of Simon Bolivar. The President then met again with the Venezeulan President and the two men issued a joint statement. The President and First Lady departed for Bogota Columbia. The President gave a brief address on arrival. The President dedicated a new housing project. The President and First Lady attended a luncheon in their honor at the San Carlos Palace. A meeting then took place between President Kennedy and President Lieras of Columbia. The President greeted the staff at the US Embassy and then attended a State Dinner in his honor at the San Carlos Palace. At 12:15 Am the President departed Columbia.
18 The President and First Lady arrived at Palm Beach Airport after an overnight flight from Columbia. The President had non pubic activities on this day.
19 The President returned to Washington. He had a meeting with Dillon, Heller, Bell, Staats, Sorensen, Gordon Tobin Bundy and O'Brien. The President chaired a National Security Council Meeting in the afternoon. The Presidents Father Joseph Kennedy suffered a stroke and the President and the Attorney General flew down to Florida to be with their Father.
20 The President spent the day going back and forth to the St Mary's hospital. In the evening he met with Rusk, Bundy, Salinger, General Clifton, Ambassador David Bruce, Charles Bohlen, Glenn Seaborg and Dr Brown.
21 The President visited his Father in the hospital in the morning. He then flew to Bermuda to meet with Prime Minister Macmillan of Great Britain. The two leaders met all afternoon. In the evening the Governor of Bermuda hosted a Black Tie dinner in honor of the President.
22 The President and the British Prime Minister continued there meetings in the morning. In the afternoon the President returned to West Palm beach and visited his Father in the hospital.
23 The President went to church and visited the hospital.
24 The President and First Lady attended church and then the President met with the President of Argenitna. The two Presidents had lunch together. The the President Kennedy went to visit his father in the hospital.
25 The President and First Lady visited Joseph Kennedy in the hospital.
26 The President visited his Father in the hospital.
27 The President visited and First Lady visited Joseph Kennedy in the hospital. The President and the First Family and guests took a cruise aboard the Honey Fitz.
28 The President and First Lady and Caroline visited Joseph Kennedy in the hospital.
29 The First Family went for a cruise. In the evening the President entertained 23 members of the writing press and answered their questions.
30 The President visited his Father in the hospital and took a cruise on the Honey Fitz.
31 The President visited his Father in the hospital. In the evening the President and First Lady went to Charles Wrightmans estate for New Year Eve.
