Nat Turner Slave Rebellion

Chase

The same year that Garrison began publishing in 1831 Nat Turner a slave in Southampton County Virginia led a rebellion. The slaves killed between 55 and 65 people before being supressed after a few days. Nat Turner himself remained at large for two months before being captured. 56 slaves were executed including Turner for being part of the revolt, and at least 100 more were killed in retaliation. The Turner revolt spread fear througout the south. As a result of the rebellion laws were passed making it illegal to educate slaves or for them to have prayer meetings without a white minister present.
