The P-39 was one of the most controversial aircraftof the war. It was originally designed as a close air support plane, but then modified to act as an interceptor, a job it was ill equipped to perform.It was a successful close air support aircraft. 9,585 were built, of which5,000 were sent to the Soviet Union.
