Ft. George Captured

On May 27, 1813, American forces, under Lt. Col. Winfield Scott, attack and capture the British garrison at Fort George, commanded by British General Vincent.

In the early hours of May 27, 1813 Colonel Winfield Scott led a small force of 400 ashore at Newark on the shore of Lake Ontario.   His goal was Ft George. More American forces were ready to join him.  Opposing Scott was Brigadier General John Vincent with 1,100 soldiers.  Scott led a charge inland which the British tried to resist.  American ships offshore were able to support Scott, and before long the British troops began retreating. Scott was able to move between the British forces and Ft George.  He quickly captured the fort despite the British attempts to blow it up.  The British quickly abandoned all of their posts along the Niagara River including Fort Erie.
