First Known Native American Composition
One of the earliest known instances of European-style composition by an indigenous American came from a Native singer associated with the city of Tlaxcala in Mexico, who composed a polyphonic Mass during the colonial era. The achievement reflected the rapid musical training that followed Spanish missionary activity in New Spain.
Following the conquest, Franciscan and other missionaries established schools in which indigenous students were taught European plainchant, polyphony, and notation. Many proved highly accomplished, singing and composing sacred music for cathedral and mission services across the region.
The composition of a Mass by a Tlaxcalan singer demonstrated the depth to which European art music had taken root among indigenous communities. It stands as an important early landmark in the blending of Native American and European musical traditions in the Americas.
