US Helps Keep the Peace Between India Pakistan
During the later part of 2001 and throughout 2002 a series of attacks in India and Kashmir brought India an Pakistan almost to the brink of war. The attacks included an attack on the Indian parliament in which suicide gunmen killed 7 people and an attack on an Indian army base in which 34 were killed. Indian massed troops on the Pakistani border and tensions were very high. The United exerted pressure on both sides. By October both sides began to withdraw forces and tensions eased.
