US and Great Britain Begin Attack on the Taliban in Afghanistan
On September 20th President Bush gave a Joint Address to Congress in which he outlined the United States response to the attacks of September 11th. Among those responses was the creation of a new executive agency the Department of Homeland Security. Bush demanded that the Taliban government of Afghanistan hand over Osama Bin Ladin and the other terrorist who had plotted and directed the September 11th attacks. When they did not the American and the British began a series of air attacks against the Taliban on October 7th. Those attacks combined with the judicious use of Special Forces succeeded in deposing the Taliban from power in Afghanistan.
