Segregation Legal
On May 18th, 1896 the Supreme Court announced its decision in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson. Plessy was a Black man who was refused transport on a white section of a train. His lawyers claimed that this violated the 15th Amendment. The Supreme Court disagreed, and stated that "separate but equal" was constitutional.
