Confederate forces engage Union cavalry west of town. Despite fierce resistance from Buford's cavalry and the Iron Brigade, Union forces are driven through Gettysburg to the high ground of Cemetery Hill. General Reynolds is killed leading the defense.
Lee attacks both Union flanks. Savage fighting erupts at Little Round Top, Devil's Den, the Wheatfield, and the Peach Orchard. Colonel Chamberlain's 20th Maine holds the critical left flank with a desperate bayonet charge. The Union line holds.
After the largest artillery bombardment of the war, 15,000 Confederate soldiers advance across open ground in Pickett's Charge. The assault is repulsed with devastating losses. Lee retreats to Virginia. Nearly 50,000 men are casualties of the three-day battle.
