SIERRA LEONE

Another African country dominated initially by the Portuguese, Sierra Leone became a British colony in 1808. The diverse population has been a hallmark of Sierra Leone, comprised of native peoples and the descendants of ex-slaves. Since independence was attained in 1961, the country has withstood great difficulties, including a civil war raging on-and-off for the better part of the 1990s and a situation which has still not been fully resolved.
