EQUATORIAL GUINEA

Equatorial Guinea is nominally a democracy. In 1991, the country embarked upon a process of democratization and the GREG now allows political opposition. The 1993 legislative, 1995 municipal and 1996 presidential multi-party elections were all considered deeply flawed by most international and independent observers and regarded by many in Equatorial Guinea as rigged. Some detention of opponents to the regime and abuse while in custody are still reported, although there has been improvement in human rights practices in recent years.
