1880 Republican Convention

Exposition Hall Chicago, ILL June 2 to 8, 1880 Nominated: James Garfield of Ohio for President Nominated: Chester Arthur of New York for Vice President The Republican convention opened with three candiates, there was a draft movement to nominate Grant for the third term after a four year absence. Many opposed the breaking of the two term tradition established by Washington. They supported either Blaine or Secretary of the Treasury John Sherman. The convention deadlocked for thirty five ballots. Grant remianed 66 votes short of the nomination. On the 36th ballot the anti- Grant vote switched to James Garfield and he was nominated.
