Peasant life was controlled, in large part, by the calendar. In October, peasants plowed the soil for winter crops. In November, excess livestock were slaughtered. In February and March, soil was turned for the summer crops and in August and September, the harvest took place.
Religious festivals provided the highlights of peasant life. The peasantry assembled together for baptisms, marriages or funerals.
Peasants lived in simple cottages, constructed with wood frames. Roofs were thatched and most houses consisted of either one or two rooms. The basic food staple was bread, supplemented by vegetables, cheese and eggs.
Peasants ate meat only on the most important of feast days.
