Jawaharlal Nehru 1889- 1964 Indian Statesman Indian statesman Jawaharlal Nehru was educated in England and passed the English bar. He returned to India where, after serving on the high court of Allahabad, he joined the Indian National Congress and became one of its leaders. Nehru was jailed often by the British and served a total of 18 years in prison. After India was granted independence, Nehru became the Prime Minister. He held that post until his death in 1964.
