Henry Stewart, husband of Mary the Scott was killed when he was blown up. It was believed but not proved that Mary was behind the explosion. Mary went on to marry her lover James Hepburn, in a Protestant ceremony. This resulted in the Catholics of Scotland turning against her and forcing her to abdicate. She was defeated in battle near Glascow on May 13, 1568. Mary fled to England where she lived under virtual house arrest for 18 years. |
