| With the end of the World War II, the Jews in Palestine resumed their campaign to gain independence from the British. One of their most potent weapons was bringing into Palestine survivors of the Holocaust. In addition, they launched attacks against British military targets. The more extreme elements also killed British soldiers. Finally Britain had had enough; it turned the problem over to the U.N., which appointed a commission of inquiry. That commission recommended the partition of Palestine into two states: Jewish and Arab. The Jews accepted the plan, while the Arabs opposed it. |
