September 1962- President Kennedy's Schedule

1 President and Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. and Mrs. Auchincloss, Janet and James Auchincloss cruise aboard the Honey Fitz, Newport, Rhode Island. President Kennedy went to the navy base to visit the USS Joseph Kennedy, named for his brother.
2 The President and Mrs Kennedy attend Mass at St Mary's Catholic Church. President Kennedy and guests cruise aboard the Manitou, Newport, Rhode Island.
3 President Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, and Pierre Salinger cruise aboard the Marlin, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.
4 The President returns to Washington. He meets with Ruskin Bohlen, Hillenbrand, RFK and Bundy. After Lunch the same group meets again. Then the President met with Congressional leaders to discuss the Soviet Union, Berlin, and Cuba. President Kennedy had a meeting with Senator Albert Gore.
5 The President began his day with a breakfast for Legislative Leaders. The President signed S 2399 designating Frederick Douglass Home part of the National Park System. The President next met Berle Elbrick the US Ambassador to Portugal. After lunch the President had a large meeting on Nuclear Disarmament which included McNamara and Rusk. The President then met Arthur Goldberg and Walter Reuther before taking his swim and retiring to the mansion.
6 President Kennedy's first meeting of the day was with Dean Rusk . He then chaired a meeting with the National Security Council to discuss the 1962 nuclear testing program. After the meeting he met one on one with Dean Rusk and Adlai Stevenson. Next the President met with Foy Kohler the US Ambassador to the USSR. After lunch the President met with the Business Council. The President next met with Bill Lawrence followed by a meeting with Arthur Goldberg,
7 The President began his day with a meeting with Frank Thompson. He next met with Alberto Camargo the former President of Columbia. The President next had a meeting on the space program, which was attended by representatives of NASA the Defense Department and the Office of Budget. The President had an off the record meeting with Arthur Krimm. Before going to the pool the President met with Robert McNamara and McGeorge Bundy. Next the President had a meeting with Gen. Marshall Carter, Ray Cline, Arthur Lundahl, Robert McNamara, Dean Rusk, and McGeorge Bundy. He then left for Newport Rhode Island.
8 President and Mrs. Kennedy and the Auchincloss Family cruise aboard the Manitou, Newport, Rhode Island. They traveled briefly to Hyannis Port to visit Joseph Kennedy and then returned to Newport.
9 President Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy went to St Mary's Church. Late in the morning the First Family went swimming. In the afternoon they took a cruise. in the evening they had a reception for the crews of the sailboats Eastern, Gretel, and Weatherly, America's Cup competitors. Hammersmith Farm, Newport, Rhode Island.
10 The President returned to Washington. His first meeting was with the Vice President. He then met Herve Alphand the Ambassador of France. Next the President met Honorable Sir Garfield Barwick the Australian Minister for External Affairs. The President next had a meeting and luncheon with former President Eisenhower. Robert McNamara and Dean Rusk joined part of the meeting,The President next met with Senator Harry Byrd. The President then had an extended meeting on Civil Rights that included Arthur Goldberg and Robert Kennedy. The Presidents next meeting was one on pollical strategy, followed by a meeting with Clark Clifford. The President ended his official day with a meeting on Berlin.
11 The President and Vice President on Separate planes traveled to Huntsville Alabama to inspect the Redstone testing grounds of NASA. From there they traveled to Cape Canaveral. At Cape Canaveral they inspected Launch Complex 14 where the Mercury program was being launched from. They entered Complex #37 where the Saturn program was beginning. The President spoke to NASA personnel. The President and Vice President then flew to Houston were they remained for the night.
12 The President gave an address at Rice University in Houston. This address was devoted primarily to the Space Program. The President then toured the NASA facilities in Houston and inspected a mock-up of the Apollo spacecraft. The President next flew to St Louis and visited the facility of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation the prime contractor for the space capsules. He address 10,000 assembled employees of the company before boarding a plane to return to Washington.
13 President Kennedy began the day with a Legislative Leaders Meeting. The President then signed S 476 to establish Point Retuse National Seashore. The President next met with Dean Rusk and then had a larger meeting in preparation for the afternoon Press Conference. The President swore in members of the US delegation to the UN 17th General Assembly. The President hosted a Luncheon in Honor of Acting Secretary General of the UN U Thant. After lunch the President greeted participants in the NATO Parliamentarians Conference. The President then met a Jewish delegation. The President next gave his Press Conference. After the Press Conference the President had a meeting with Orville Dryfus of the New York Times.
14 President Kennedy began the day by signing S 2965 which provided excelerated spending on Public Works. The President next met Karl Heinrich Knapperstein the new Ambassador of Germany. The meeting was followed by a meeting with Ludwig Erhard the Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Next the President met with George Meany of the AFL-CiIO. The President next met with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Kennedy next had an off the record meeting with Henry Luce, followed by a meeting with Congressman Vaughan Gary. After lunch the President departed for Newport Rhode Island. The President and Mrs Kennedy attended Australian Ambassador Sir Howard Beale's dinner for the America's Cup crews, the Breakers, Newport, Rhode Island.
15 President and Mrs. Kennedy and 25 guests watch the America's Cup Race from theĀ U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. off Newport, Rhode Island.
16 President Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy as well as Lady Ormsby Gore and her children go to St Mary's Church for Mass. President and Mrs. Kennedy and guests cruise aboard the Honey Fitz, Newport, Rhode Island.
17 President and Mrs. Kennedy cruise aboard the Manitou, and the Honey Fitz, Newport, Rhode Island.
18 The President and Mrs Kennedy begin the day by watching the America Cup Race from the Joseph Kennedy. The First Couple leave in the middle of the afternoon to fly to Boston. The President and Mrs. Kennedy voted in the Massachusetts primary elections in Boston. The President's brother Teddy was running in the primary and won.
19 The President began the day at the beach in Newport. In early afternoon the President and Mrs Kennedy sailed on the Honey Fritz. The President then returned to Washington. Upon his return he met Gregoire Kayibanda the President of the Republic of Rwanda. The President then met with Dean Rusk. A meeting on Cuba was held. The President concluded his official day with a meeting with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
20 The President began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. He then signed HJ Res 783 the Delaware New Jersey Compact. The President motored over to the Sheraton Park Hotel there he Addressed to the Board of Governors of the World Bank and the International Monetary fund. The President next met with Advisory Committee on Banking to the Controller of the Currency. The President next hosted a luncheon with Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governors. After Lunch the President met with Minister of Finance of India. The President then flew to Harrisburg Pennsylvania were he visited a Farm Show and then spoke to a Democratic Fund Raising Dinner. The President then traveled to Newport, Rhode Island.
21 The President and First Lady cruised twice during the day on the Honey Fitz. On the second cruise they sailed to Hyannis Port to visits the Presidents Father. In the evening he Addressed t a dinner meeting of the Ohio State Democratic Convention in Columbus by telephone from Newport, Rhode Island.
22 The President and Mrs Kennedy watched the America Cup Race from the Joseph Kennedy.
23 The President and Mrs Kennedy attended St Mary's Church for Mass. They went to Bailey's Beach in the afternoon.
24 The President and Mrs Kennedy took a helicopter to Quonset Naval Air Station to welcome the President of Pakistan. The Pakistani President returned with the First Couple to Hammersmith Farm. A Luncheon in honor of President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan was then given. In the afternoon the President and First Lady returned to Washington.
25 President Kennedy began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President then met Nguayen Dinh Thuan the Secretary for State Security of South Vietnam. The President next met with Prime Minister of Australia Robert G. Menzies. The President then took part in the swearing in service of the New Secretary of Labor Willard Wirtz. The President next met with members of the United Negro Fund. The President had a meeting with George Ball, George McGhee and Carl Kaysen. The President then met with Robert Kennedy , John McCone and Carl Kaysen. Next was a meeting just with RFK, followed by a meeting with Taylor, McNamara, Ball, Harriman, Bundy, Michael Forrestal, General Lemnitzer, William Sullivan, Robert Komer, Commander Bagely and Carl Kaysen. At 10:15 the President departed the White House to attended the second act of the Play "Mr President" Mrs Jack Kennedy and Rose had been there from the beginning. After the play Jackie was dropped off at the White House and the President and his mother went to after theater super dance at the British Embassy. The President arrived after midnight and returned to the White House at 2:44 AM.
26 President Kennedy began his day at 8:30 with a coffee for Democratic Congressmen. He then traveled to the Pentagon for an off the record meeting with the Joint Chiefs in the War Room. Upon returning to the White House the President signed HR 11974 the Hanford Reactor Bill. He then signed SJ Res 133 a joint resolution to provide for the coinage of a medal recognizing Sam Rayburn . Before Lunch the President met with Osborne Elliot of Newsweek. The President had lunch with Clare Booth Luce. In the afternoon the President spoke before the White House Conference of Business Editors and Publishers. The President had a meeting with RFK, John McCone and Carl Kaysen.
27 President Kennedy began his day again at 8:30 with a coffee for Democratic Congressmen. He then met with Congressman William Green. Next he presented a citation for outstanding work to H.J. Anslinger the former Commissioner of Narcotics. The President next went to the State Department were he Addressed the White House Conference on Narcotic and Drug Abuse. On returning to the White House the President met with Prince Mohammad Naim the Foreign Minister of Afghanistan. The President next met with the outgoing Ambassador of Columbia who was paying a farewell call. Joseph Alsop then had an off the record meeting with the President. The President next signed HR 12391 the Farm Bill. The President next met with members of the National Advisory Committee on Manpower and Development. After Lunch the President met with General Lyman Lemnitzer. He then met Governor Ernest Holling. The President had a meeting with Philp Graham before departing for Wheeling West Virginia At the Wheeling Public School Stadium the President addressed a public Democratic Rally. He then returned to Washington.
28 President Kennedy began his day with a meeting with George Meany, Andre Biemiller and Daniel Moynihan. He then met with Robert Morgenthau and James Donovan. The President next received the report of his Committee to Apprais Employment and Unemployment Statistics. The President next met with Meeting with Prime Minister Keith J. Holyoake of New Zealand. The President next had a meeting related to Laos. The large meeting included Ball, McNamara and Averell Harriman. The President presented the Distinguished Service Medal to General George Decker. The President then signed S 4 an act to provide for the establishment of the Padre Island National Seashore. Before lunch the President met with Walter Heller and Kermit Goron. After lunch the President met with Pote Sarasin the Secreatary General of SEATO. The President then met a delegation from the Ghandhi Peace Foundation.
29 The President began his day with a meeting with General Maxwell Taylor. He then met with Michael Forrestal. Next the President met with Michael Forrestal. His next meeting was with Llewellyn Thomson and Charles Bohlen. The President next met with Cyrus Vance, General Wheeler and General Maxwell Taylor. In the afternoon the President had meetings with Attorney General Robert Kennedy and others to discussĀ James Meredith's enrollment and the situation at the campus of the University of Mississippi.
30 The President cancelled his weekend trip to Newport due to the evens surronding the enrollment of James Meredith. The President attended mass at St Stephens Church. The President had a luncheon wtih Foreign Secretary Lord Horme. Attendeding the luncheon was Dean Rusk, David Armsby-Gore Ambassador of Great Britain, George Ball and David Bruce, US Ambassador to Great Britain. After the lunch there was a wide ranging disucssion on Berlin, Congo, Cuba and other matters. At 10PM President Kennedy gave a Radio and TV address on the Meredith case in Mississippi.
