June 1961- President Kennedy's Schedule


 

1 The President began his day by visiting the American Embassy, where he spoke to the staff. The President then had a private meeting with French President De Gaulle. The President then went to Paris City Hall were he gave a speech. The President and Mrs Kennedy gave a luncheon in honor of the De Gaulle's. The President then met once again with President De Gaulle. The President then went to NATO headquarters were he gave a speech. In the evening the President and the First Lady attended a state dinner in their honor at Versaille Palace in the Hall of Mirrors. At 10PM the guest proceeded to Louis XV theater were attended a performance of "Rendezvous"
2 The President began his day with a visit to SHAPE( Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) were he gave a speech. The President then went to Elysee Palace were he had a meeting with President De Gaulle. The President attended a luncheon given by the French Press in honor of the President. The President then gave a Press Conference. The President and the First Lady then went to the Elysee Palace where the official visit ended. In the evening the President conferred with his advisors in preparation for the upcoming Vienna summit.
3 The President and First Lady departed for Vienna. Upon arrival they paid a courtesy visit on the Austrian President, before proceeding to the American Embassy. At 12:45 Chairman Khruschev arrived a the Embassy for the summit. Chairman Khruschev's party included A Gromyko the Soviet Foreign Minister, A Menshikov the Soviet Ambassador the US and seven other Soviet officials. The delegation included Dean Rusk McGeorge Bundy Paul Nitze, Charles Bohlen, Ambassador Llewellyn Thomson and Feeman Mathews. The official meeting adjoined for lunch as we resumed after. At 3PM the President and Chairman had a private meeting. In the evening the President and first Lady attended a State dinner held at the Schoebrun Palace.
4 The President and first lady attended church at St Stephens Cathedral. From 10:15 to 1PM the President met with Chairman Khruschev. At 1 the President had lunch at the Soviet Embassy. After lunch the President and the Chairman had a private meeting. The President then returned to the American Embassy and immediately departed for London. On arrival in London the President was greeted by British Prime Minister Macmillan.
5 The President began his day by going to the US Embassy in London where he spoke to the staff. The President then attended had a meeting with Prime Minister Macmillan. The Prime Minister then hosted a luncheon in honor of the President and First Lady. The President and First Lady then attended a christening ceremony at Westminster Cathedral. The President then held a reception. In the evening the President attended a dinner in his honor at Buckingham Palace hosted by Queen Elizabeth. At 11:40 President and first lady departed for Washington.
6 At 9:30 AM the President and First Lady arrived at Andrews Air Force Base. The President's first meeting on returning was with Vice President Johnson. The President met with Dean Rusk and Charles Bohlen before having a meeting with the Congressional Leadership to brief them on his meeting with Khruschev. In the evening the President spoke to the American people on his summit.
7 The President traveled to the US Naval Academy were he spoke at the graduation exercises. The President returned to the White House. The President met with Kenneth Galbriath the US Ambassador to India. The President had an off the record meeting in the mansion with: LBJ, Allen Dulles, Arthur Schlesinger, McNamara, Richard Goodwin, Admiral Burke, Allen Dulles. Chester Bolwes Alex Johnson and RFK. The President next met with the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. The President dropped in on a dinner at the Mayflower hotel in honor Edward Foley and the Big Brothers.
8 The President spoke at the National Conference of United Press International. The President met with Carl Bernhardt Sparth the Dean of Stanford Law School. The President then went to receive Fulbert Youlou the President of Congo. The President met with the President of Congo. Following the meeting the President hosted a luncheon in honor of the President of Congo. The President then traveled to Palm Beach
9 The President spent the day at the home of Mr and Mrs Charles Wrightsman in Palm Beach

12 The President returned to Washington from Palm Beach. He held a luncheon in honor of Amitore Fanfani the President of the Council of Ministers if Italy. Following the luncheon the President had a meeting with Fanfani. The President held a meeting with Douglas Dillon, Robert Rooosa, William McMartin, Walter Heller, Kermit Gordon. Robert Turner and Kenneth Galbriath. The President then had another meeting with the Italian President.
13 The President began his day with a breakfast meeting of the Congressional Leadership. The President met with the Mayor of New Orleans. He then met with the Italian President once again. In the afternoon the President had a meeting with the National Security Council. The President had an off the wall meeting with Wilbur Mills and Douglas Dillon.
14 The President began his day with a meeting with Senator Ben Smith. He then met with Nguyen Dinh Thum of the Vietnamese government. The President then met with a delegation from Michigan including Senator Phillip Hart and Governor John Swainson. The President met with the Ceylonese Parliament representatives. The President held a meeting with Dean Rusk Thomas Finletter the US Representative to NATO, Foy Kohler the Secretary of State for European Affairs and Roswell Gilpatric the Department of Defense. In the evening the President took a cruise together with Mr and Mrs Smith, Congressman Torbert McDonald. Lemoyne Billing and Miss Pamela Tunure.
15 The President met with US Ambassadors to Cameroon and Upper Volta. He then met with Mayor Wagner of New York. The President then held a Cabinet Meeting. The President presented an award to Vice Admiral Raborn Jr for helping develop the fleet ballistic missile system. The President then met with Romauld Sparowski the US Ambassador to Poland. The President then had a meeting in the Mansion to preview the 1963 Budget. The President then had off the record meeting with the Joint Chiefs and LBJ, RFK and Dean Rusk.
16 The President had off the record meeting with Senator James Eastland. The President had a meeting with McGeorge Bundy, Fay Kohler and Henry Owens. the President then met with the Secretary General of NATO. The President had a meeting with Robert Lovett and Robert Kennedy. The President then addressed National Conference on International Social Development at the Shoreham hotel. The President had a meeting with Robert McNamara. The President then had a meeting with William Ira Cargo the representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The President and the first lady then flew to Glen Ora.

19 The President and First Lady returned to Washington. The President met with the Commission on Money and Credits. President Kennedy met with the Ambassador of Ghana. The President the signed the Social Progress Trust Fund Agreement. The President had a meeting with Senator Fulbright . After lunch the President had a briefing on the pending visit by Japanese Prime Minister Ikeda. He then had an off the record meeting with General Maxwell Taylor
20 The President began his day with a breakfast meeting of the Legislative Leaders. He then had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan Hayato Ikeda. John Baden Ambassador to the United Arab Republic then met the President. The President then had a meeting with Steward Udal and members of his staff. The President met with the Vice President. In the evening the President and First Lady had Mr William Walton and Mrs Oats Lieter over for an off the record dinner
21 The President had a private meeting with President Eisenhower. President Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy then hosted luncheon in honor of the Prime Minister of Japan. After lunch the President met with Prime Minister Ikeda on the Presidential yacht Honey Fritz
22 The President was ill due to the virus and cancelled all of his appointments
23 The President was still recuperating from his virus and had all of his appointments in the mansion. He started his day with a goodbye meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister. He then met with Adlai Stevenson, Dean Risk, Chester Bowles. Ambassador Ellis O Biggs, and Richard Goodwin. The President had a meeting with Dr Nathan Pursey the President of Harvard University. The President had lunch with Dean Rusk, Robert McNamara, Foy Kohler, McGeorge Bundy, Llewellyn Thompson, Senator Fulbright, Senator Mansfield, and Senator Richard Russell. In the afternoon the President had an off the record meeting with Robert Kennedy and General Maxwell Taylor.
24 The President had an off the record meeting with General Lyman Lemnitzer and Chester Clifton, he also had a meeting with McGeorge Bundy. The President and the First Lady traveled to Glen Ora.
25 President Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy attended church at St John's Parish.
26 The President and First Lady returned to Washington. The President held an off the record meeting with General Maxwell Taylor and McGeorge Bundy. The President then held a meeting with representatives of the Russian Press. The President had a meeting with Arthur Goldberg. The President then met with the Vice President of Liberia. The President met with Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas. The President met with Vice Admiral George Anderson, Chief of Naval Operations. The President then had a meeting on Foreign Aid. The President closed his official day with a meeting with Dean Rusk and Adlia Stevenson
27 The President began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President met with Orville Freedman and members of department of Agriculture. The President met with the Governor of Puerto Rico. The President met with General Chester Cliftin and McGeorge Bundy. The President then had a meeting on Food Aid. In the Manion in after lunch the President met with newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Chad. The President also met with Robert McNamara, Allen Dulles and Congressman Charles Buckley
28 The President had breakfast with Dean Rusk, Foy Kohler, Averell Harriman, Theodore Sorenson, McGeorge Bundy, Pierre Salinger. President Kennedy gave a press conference . The President made a short remarks at a Foods for Peace Conference. The President met with a large Congressional delegation to discuss the scope of a peace organization. The President then had an off the record meeting with Rusk, McNamara, RFK, and General Maxwell Taylor. The President then met with RFK. In the afternoon the President had an off the record meeting with Allen Dulles, General Maxwell Taylor , Bundy, Dungan, Coyne. The President then met with Rusk, Hodges, Bowles, Ball, Feldman and Hickman Price from the Department of Commerce. He ended his official day with a meeting with Walter Heller
29 The President began his day with a signing ceremony for HR-671 a highway bill. The President had a meeting with Senator Robert Kerr. The President had a meeting with his Father. President Kennedy then had meetings with the US Ambassadors to Niger, Saudi Arabia, Maretania, Guatemala, Brazil and Czechoslovakia. The President then signed S-610 a bill to create a Travel Service Office within the Department of Commerce. After lunch the President met in the mansion with the President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He also met with the Ambassador of France. Late in the afternoon the President had a meeting with the National Security Council
30 The President began his day with a meeting with a delegation from Laos, including the Deputy Prime Minister. The President then met with General Kwon Chung, the new Ambassador from South Korea. The President then signed the Old Age Survivors and Dependents Insurance Bill, and amendment to the Social Security Act of 1961. The President had a large luncheon in the mansion to discuss foreign aid. Included in the lunch was RFK and Rusk as well as a large number of representatives on commerce and industry who had overseas operations. Included in the group was Thomas Watson the President of IBM, Warren Lee Pierson President of TWA. The President officiated at the swearing in ceremony of Curtis E LeMay as Chief of Staff of the US Air Force. The President met with the VP and RFK. The President and the First Family flew to Hyanis Port
