April 1961

1 The President who was in Palm Beach, began his day with a long meeting with Sec of State Rusk. The President played golf in the afternoon. In the evening the President and First Lady spent the evening in the home of Charles K Wrightsman
2 The President and First Lady attended Easter Sunday Service at St Edwards Church. In the afternoon the President played golf. In the evening the President and his family watched the movie All in A Nights Work
3 The President continued his vacation in Palm Beach. In the evening the family watched Posse From Hell
4 The President began his day in Palm Beach. He played a round of golf. In the afternoon he returned to Washington where he addressed the Delegates attended the Conference on Foreign Policy Briefing.
5 The President began day with meetings with Arthur Schlesinger, George Ball and then McGeorge Bundy. The President then began a summit meeting with British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and his party. The President and the British party met throughout the day.
6 The first major meeting of the day was the off the record meeting with Rusk, McNamara, Dulles, Berle, Mann and Wymberley Goerr. The President then met with Ambassador of Thailand. He then met with the Ambassador from Australia. The President then met with Prime Minister of Great Britain in the office, that meeting then continued on the Presidential Yacht Honey Fritz
7 The President began his day with a meeting with his economic team. He met off the record with Walton A Cole the General Manager of Reuters. In the afternoon the President had meetings with Senator Everett Dirkson as well as a meeting with Congressman John J Rooney and Senator Thomas Kachel
8 The President began his day with a meeting with his Foreign Policy Team. That was followed by a meeting with the British Prime Minister and his party. The President then met with General Douglas MacArthur. The President then met with Helen Keller. The President then departed for Glen Ora
9 The President and First Lady attended John's Parish Church. In the afternoon the First Lady went riding while the President played golf
10 The President returned to Washington by car. He then addressed the Chiefs of Staff of Nato. A meeting was then held with the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands. The President then attended the opening of the baseball season. The President had dinner at the home of Arthur Krock
11 The President had a Breakfast meeting with Legislative Leaders. The President had a meeting with Frederick Reihhardt the American Ambassador designate to Italy. The President had an off the record meeting the Senator Frank Church, Congressman Ralph Harding and Congressman Gracie Post. The President then met with Mr and Mrs Louis Selter of the Cleveland Press. The President then met with Malio Brosio Ambassador of Italy. The President then met with LBJ, Rusk, Ball, Kohler, Dowling, Bundy Rostow. The President had a meeting with General Norstad, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe
12 The President began his day with a meeting with James Webb administrator of NASA. The President met with German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. A luncheon was then held for the German Chancellor. In the afternoon the President had a Press Conference. This was followed by a meeting with Bundy, Lemntizer, McNamara, Rusk, Robert Kennedy, Bissell and Barnes
13 After a meeting with Rusk the President began his day with an extended meeting with German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. and his party. The President had a second meeting with Adenauer. in the afternoon. At the end of the day the President greeted a group of Assemblyman from California
14 The President first major event of the day was a speech at the opening meeting of the Organization of American States. In the afternoon the President met with the Mayors of Tuscon and New Haven. he had a meeting with the former PM of France Paul Reynauld In the evening the President had a Coffee for Congressman He had a late meeting with Hugh Sidney attended to by Hugh Sidney, Sorenson, Bell and Wiesner
15 The President had a meeting with George Meany the President of AFL-CIO and Arthur Goldberg. The President gave a speech at the State Department to a group celebrating "African Freedom Day". The President had a meeting with Rusk, Bundy, Bissell , Schlesinger and Berle. He then met with the US Ambassador to Greece, and later Najeeb Halaby the director of the FAA. The President then traveled to Glen Ora were he relaxed the rest of the day.
16 The President and First Lady attended church at St John's Parish. In the afternoon the President play nine rounds of golf.
17 The President returned to the White House from Glen Ora. The President met with Manuel G Escalante the Ambassador of Costa Rica. The President met with new ambassadors from Dahomey and Niger. The President had a long meeting with Secretary of State Rusk. The President met with the Prime Minister of Greece and then together with the First Lady sponsored a luncheon in honor of the Prime Minister. The President met with ambassador to Spain.
18 The President began his day with a Legislative Leaders Breakfast. The President then had a private meeting with Senator Albert Gore. The President had a meeting with Jose Chirlbogan the Foreign Minister of Ecuador. The President had a long off the record meeting with LBJ, RFK, McNamara, Lemnitzer, Rusk and Bohlen. The topic the Bay of Pigs. The President had an off the record lunch with James Reston and Arthur Schlesinger . The President had a meeting with Congressman Harold Cooley. . The President then had another meeting with the same group as earlier on the Bay of Pigs. The President had Off the Record meetings with Allen Dulles and then a briefing with LBJ and Senator Styles Bridges, Congressman Charled Halleck and Senator Everett Dirksen. The President had meetings with Bundy and Rostow and then a meeting with RFK. In the evening (9:45) the President and First Lady met with LBJ and Mrs Johnson and Speaker Sam Rayburn to prepare for Congressional reception. At 10PM the President and First Lady gave a White Tie reception for members of Congress. For 11:55 to 2:45 AM the President had an emergency meeting on Cuba.
19 The President first met with Jose Figureres , former President of Costa Rica. The President then met with Constantine Caraminlis Prime Minister of Greece, together with the Foreign Minister. The President presented the National Geographic Society gold medal to Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The President had a meeting with Tom Mboya, Secretary General of Kenya African National Union and Kenneth Kaunda the President of the United National Independence Party of Northern Rhodesia. The President had another Defense meeting on Cuba. The President then met with Narman Manley the premier of Jamaica. The President had a meeting Jose Micro Cardona head of the anti Castro Revolutionary Council and his supporters. The President had a large meeting on Cuba with Key Defense and Congressional leaders. Congressional leaders included Senators Mike Mansfield, Richard Russell, William Fulbright, Everett Dirkson, Syles Bridges, and Leverett Saltonstall and Congressmen John McCormack, Carl Vinson, Charles Halleck and Leslie Arende. In the evening the President and First Lady attended a dinner at the Greek Embassy. At 10:57 PM the President began a late night meeting on Cuba the continued until 12:31 AM.
20 In the morning the President The President made his first comments on the Bay of Pigs, at a speech before the American Society of Newspaper Editors . The President had a meeting with the Governor of California.
21 The President had an off the record breakfast with Rusk, Bundy, Sorenson and Salinger in preparation for his Press Conference. He then gave a Press Conference most of which was dedicated to Cuba. On his return to the White House the President met with General Maxwell Taylor who was joined by Allen Dulles he then had an Off the Record meeting with Senator Fulbright. After lunch the President had an Off the Record meeting with LBJ and Senator Goldwater. The meeting included a walk around the White House grounds.
22 The President began his day with a two hour National Security Council Meeting. After the meeting the President flew to Camp David for a meeting with former President Eisenhower. After lunch and a meeting President Kennedy toured Camp David and flew to Glen Ora.
23 The President and First Lady attended church at St John's Parish.
24 The President flew from Glen Ora to Andrew's Airforce Base to welcome President Sukarno of Indonesia. The two Presidents met together for the rest of the morning. President Kennedy then hosted a luncheon for President Sukarno. After lunch the President met with Senator John Sparkman and Senator Lister Hill and Congressman Frank Boykin. The President met with the Ambassador to South Africa.
25 President began the day with a breakfast meeting with Legislative Leaders. The President then had a short meeting with Indonesian President Sukarno. The President had a meeting with New York Mayor Wagner. The President then went to the National Academy of Science building to speak to the Annual Meeting of the National Academy of Sciences. The President held a meeting with Senator Humphrey together with a representative of Farmers Union Terminal Association. The President then had a hour long meeting with Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York. The President then had a meeting with Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. The President then traveled to the State Department to address the Foreign Policy Briefing Conference of the Daily and Periodical Press. The President then met with Senators Bible and Cannon of Nevada. The President signed a special appropriations Bill for NASA
26 The President began his day with a meeting with Secretary of Treasury Dillon. He then had an off the record meeting with Senator George Aiken. The President met with Joseph McMurray, the chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. He them met first with Congressman Tom Murray followed by Wayne Hays. That meeting was followed by a meeting with Henry Alexander of the Citizens Committee on Foreign Aid. After lunch the President met with Governor Michael Di Salle of Ohio. The President then met with the Canadian Minister of Labor followed by a meeting with Ambassador of France. The President and First Lady then held a coffee for additional Congressmen. The day concluded with a private dinner for Mrs Charles Wrigthman
27 The President started the day with a representative of Sierre Leon. He then attended a two hour National Security Council Meeting. The President the had an Off the Record Meeting with Congressional leaders on the situation in Laos. In the afternoon the President traveled to New York where he addressed the American Newspapers Publishers Association.
28 The President traveled to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel were he visited former President Herbert Hoover in suite 31A and then went upstairs to meet General Douglas MacArthur in suite 37A. He then lunched with Dag Hammarskjold the Secretary General of the UN and US Ambassador Adlai Stevenson. The President then traveled to Chicago were his spoke at a Cook County Democratic Fund raising Dinner. The President then returned to Washington.
29 The President's day began with a meeting of the National Security Council. US ambassadors to Togo, Costa Rica Luxembourg and Chile had brief meetings with the President as they were about to assume their posts. The President then traveled to Glen Ora.
30 The President and the First Lady Attended Church a St John's Parish. The President returned to the White House late in the afternoon.
