Hugh Hefner was born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago Il. He went to Sayre Elementary School and Steinmetz High School before serving in the army as writer between 1944-46. He then attended University of Illinois at Urbana. He started Playboy in in 1952. Although the magazine was principally devoted to displaying photographs of nude women, it is also known for its substantive articles on politics and other issues of the day. Hefner was known for his wild lifestyle and his Playboy mansion he lived in, always involved in another set of woman.

In 1988, after a period of declining readership, Hefner's daughter assumed the editorship of the magazine, helping to boost its circulation once more.
